About Malaysia

The Malaysian currency is denoted in Ringgit Malaysia (RM or MYR). Notes are available in RM1, RM5, RM20, RM50 and RM 100 denominations, while coins are issued in 5, 10, 20 and 50 sen (cents) denominations. eWallet, such as Touch N Go or Alipay, are used widely in Malaysia.
The country experiences tropical weather all year round, with temperatures ranging from 21ºC (70ºF) to 32ºC (90ºF). Expect rain showers during the wet season from April to October on the West Coast and from November to February on the Peninsula’s East Coast.
As of 2024, the Malays comprise about 57% of the population, while the Chinese, Indians, and other ethnic groups comprise the rest of Malaysia’s diverse population. Bahasa Melayu remains the national language, with various ethnic groups conversing in their languages and dialects, such as Cantonese and Mandarin among the Chinese, and Hindi, Tamil, and Urdu among the Indians. English is also widely spoken across the country. With a population of approximately 34 million, Islam is the official religion, while other religions, such as Buddhism, Christianity, and Hinduism, are also widely and freely practiced.

Standard voltage is 220 – 240 Volts AC at 50 cycles per second. Malaysia uses standard 3-pin square plugs and sockets.
Malaysia follows the Imperial metric system for weight and measurement, as commonly practiced in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Local calls can be made from public phones using coins or prepaid cards. International calls can also be made using phone cards or at any Telekom office.

The GSM frequency band is GSM 1800. Public Wi-Fi connection is available, although we recommend purchasing a local prepaid or SIM card for short to medium-length stays, should you wish to travel further.

Accessibility

Several transport options are available based on the visitor’s convenience. The nearest train station to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is the Serdang KTM Station. The closest MRT station is the Kajang MRT Station. Other options include taxi and e-hailing services, such as Grab car are also available. The free shuttle bus service at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) runs every 25 minutes (subject to traffic conditions) between 0700 and 2130 hours daily. The shuttle covers key locations within the campus, including UPM Main Gate, UPM Library, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Kolej Pendeta Za’ba, and the Serdang KTM Station.
Public parking is available at various designated parking areas within UPM, including the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Car Park, Faculty of Engineering Car Park, and Faculty of Educational Studies Car Park. Visitors can also find parking at nearby facilities such as the UPM Sports Complex and the Serdang KTM Station. Participants are encouraged to take public transport or park within the vicinity for convenience.
